Boon shared his interest in running such a tournament on his personal Twitter page - you can check out the tweet below. “After Covid… I’d love to do a NetherRealm Cup… including all of out most recent games,” Boon wrote. He specifically listed Mortal Kombat 9, Injustice 1, Mortal Kombat 10, Injustice 2, and Mortal Kombat 11. Known for its illustrious fighting games, a NetherRealm tournament will likely attract considerable talent if it goes ahead. However, Boon doesn’t know when it will be sufficiently safe to host said tournament - none of us do. As a result, he also added some thoughts on how to reappropriate some of NetherRealm’s older games for a virtual competition. “But if Covid lasts for years, then we might have to add rollback code to MK9 and Injustice 1,” he wrote. Naturally, fans have taken well to the possibility of adding netcode to classic fighting games Mortal Kombat 9 and Injustice 1 given that it would drastically improve the connection of players competing online. Hosting a new NetherRealm tournament would also serve to appease fans who were disappointed by the necessary cancellation of a variety of Mortal Kombat competitions due to the coronavirus earlier this year. In related news, an Injustice 3 reveal could be just around the corner given that a third installment for the games’ corresponding comic book series was teased last week. Also, UFC boss Dana White recently hosted the first Fight Island event, which is essentially like a real-life Mortal Kombat. The first round of fights took place on Yas Island, located off the coast of Abu Dhabi, on July 12, and featured a prestige scrap between Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal as the main event (the former won on decision). White plans to continue hosting Fight Island matches for the foreseeable future, so even if fans don’t get a NetherRealm tournament any time soon, they can at least tune in to the UFC.
